Ways To Be Successful With PPC Campaigns
Author David Schneider | Sep 18,2007  |  Print  | Share This
Pay-per-click (PPC), or paid search, has become very popular with online marketers, especially with the popularity of Overture and Google AdWords rising. PPC campaigns use a "pay for performance" concept. Search engines send visitor traffic to marketers' websites and marketers pay only for the traffic actually generated from the campaign. As long as conversion rates stay great, marketers can find PPC to be a great deal. However, in order to prevent PPC from becoming an expensive proposition, marketers must make sure that leads are actually becoming customers. Otherwise, marketers end up paying cash for people to browse a web site. There are many things that marketers can and should do to ensure good conversion and therefore PPC success.

Develop Brand and Product

Before PPC comes into the picture, companies will want to develop a brand, web site and product. The better a face a company can put forward, the more intriguing the company and its services or products will be. Even with a very solid PPC campaign, customers will simply not buy products that are shoddy or overpriced. Developing a solid business and a great product at a good price is the key. Your product or service must be something that people want to buy.

Make Navigation Seamless

Once Internet users click over to your web site, what will they see? You are paying for the traffic, so make sure that users are taken to a site they will want to visit. Potential customers can always click away from your site - and you will still be paying for customers that arrive to your site and click away to a competitor seconds later. Make sure that your web site encourages customers to browse and buy. Include good prices, clear information and easy-to-use navigation. Help potential customers find exactly what they want from your web site and they will have less reason to visit the competition. Use attractive web design and make sure that there are no broken links or bugs. Make buying from you seamless and even pleasant.

Offer More Options

Not everyone who visits your web site will be ready to buy at once. Potential customers may want to comparison shop or may have questions about your services or products. Make it easy for customers to feel good about doing business with you. Offer several payment options and try to offer some sort of support - by phone, email or live chat. Try to make buying from your convenient and make sure that customers can get more information if they need it. You may even want to include detailed product or service information and comparisons with other leading products to make it clear why customers should buy from you.

Target Your Audience

Make sure that you bid on the right targeted search terms. Find out what your potential customers are searching for online - use market research help if necessary and bid on the most specific terms you can. Studies have shown that bidding on very general keywords does not give you great access to qualified leads. If you are not sure which keywords to bid on, get professionals to help you manage your PPC campaign at first. Also, be wary of overbidding on some terms. Some terms create bidding wars that end up costing companies money. You don't want to spend your entire budget on just a few words, especially given that only a portion of paid clicks will lead to sales. Bid smart and bid on the keywords that you know your potential customers will use.
