Is Pay Per Click Advertising Right for My Business?
Author David Schneider | Jan 21,2008  |  Print  | Share This
With so many types of online advertising from which to choose, deciding on the most effective can be daunting task. When evaluating your options, consider a range of issues -- the main one being how much traffic the ad will drive to your website versus the cost of getting it there.

Pay-per-click advertising can be a very effective way to divert traffic to your business website. If you are not careful, however, the cost can quickly soar above the benefits.

Pay-per-click ads typically appear on the right side of a search engine results page, next to the organic results. Companies bid on certain keywords, and the top advertising space goes to the highest bidder. When a user clicks on the ad and visits the corresponding website, that company gets charged.

When deciding if pay-per-click is a good route for your company, make sure to consider the following: how common your targeted keywords are, how high you are willing to bid for these keywords, how quickly you want traffic to generate from this ad and if you are part of a constantly changing industry.

Common Keywords

Depending on what keywords your advertising campaign is targeting, pay-per-click advertising may or not be the most effective path to take. If you are going to bid on keywords that are part of a niche industry, there is a good chance that you will be able to win the top advertising space at a good price. However, if your target keywords are more common, the result of the bidding war might be so high that you cannot afford all the clicks your ad will potentially generate.

Bidding Wars -- How High is Too High?

When advertisers are set on a particular keyword, they oftentimes find themselves amidst a bidding war they feel they must win. This is a very dangerous game, and you might be digging a grave for your advertising budget. Before starting the bidding process, it is imperative to predict how much traffic you will get from winning this war, and at what point the ad is going to be too expensive for your campaign.

Do I Need Traffic Immediately?

One distinct advantage of pay-per-click advertising is its ability to generate traffic instantly. Unlike organic methods, which can take weeks or months, pay-per-click allows users to see advertisements immediately. If you win your bidding war and possess the coveted top advertising space, you will likely see results within minutes of activating your ad.

Again, this can become quite expensive, especially if your keywords are common. Organic methods, though they take longer to achieve the same effect, do not cost on a per-click basis. The cost to you does not increase as the amount of clicks increases.

Is My Industry or Target Audience Constantly Changing?

If you are part of an ever-changing industry, with advertisements that quickly lose appeal, then pay-per-click has its definite advantages. While other forms of online advertising might take longer to adjust to these changes, pay-per-click allows you to update your ads instantly and keep up with the market.

You must sort through some crucial issues in deciding whether pay-per-click advertising is right for your business. If you aim to bid on common keywords with a relatively small advertising budget, you should probably reconsider. The cost can deplete your budget before you know it.

Pay-per-click advertising does allow you to update your advertisements constantly, and this greatly benefits those in a constantly changing market. Before entering the world of pay-per-click advertising, consider all the advantages and downsides.
